Heterosexual couples
Getting pregnant is not a given for everyone.
Around 1 in 6 couples experience reduced fertility, meaning that pregnancy does not occur despite a year of unprotected intercourse.
The chance of a natural pregnancy depends greatly on your personal situation. Generally, around half of young, fertile couples are pregnant within 6 months, and after a year this rises to 85%. Please see the chart for the chances of pregnancy per cycle by age group.
The chance is highest when you have sex in the days leading up to ovulation. For women with a regular 28-day cycle, this is 12–14 days after the start of the period. With a longer cycle, this is correspondingly a few days later; for example, with a 32-day cycle it is days 16–18 after the start of the period.
Besides estimating your fertile days through ovulation detection, there are other ways to increase your own chances. For example, by optimising your lifestyle.
Still not pregnant?
If pregnancy does not occur, the first step is to investigate the cause and the chances of a successful pregnancy. In heterosexual couples, reduced fertility may lie with the man, the woman or a combination of both. That is why we regard both the man and the woman as patients.
Our aim is to look into the cause together with you and, if necessary, start a suitable treatment. It may be that no cause is found; in that case too, we will think along with you. Discover the treatment options for heterosexual couples below
