The Nieuwsuur broadcasts have understandably prompted many reactions, especially among people who are having or have had treatment with donor sperm themselves. That is why we at Nij Clinics would like to explain how we handle treatments with donor material and what our view is on this important subject.
We believe in a world in which everyone can build a family. Some intended parents depend on donor material, such as sperm or eggs, to do so. At Nij Clinics there are three options: a donor from our donor bank, your own donor (for example a friend or acquaintance) or a donor from a foreign donor bank.
We see more and more intended parents choosing their known donor. We encourage this, because using a known donor contributes to transparency, better registration of the number of donor matches and traceability for the future child.
At the same time, the supply of donors from our own donor bank is not sufficient to meet the high demand. To avoid long waiting times and to give intended parents the chance to fulfil their wish to have a child, we work together with international donor banks.
We are also actively working to improve the information available about these international sperm donors, for example by discussing our patients’ needs and concerns with these banks. This enables future parents to make a well-informed choice.
At Nij Clinics we believe it is important that you, as an intended parent, are well informed about your options. During the intake and counselling consultation, we discuss the differences between national and international sperm donors. This helps you make a conscious, personal choice that suits your situation, now and in the future.
Within the Netherlands, we follow the positions of the Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Obstetrie en Gynaecologie, NVOG). We also advocate further international regulation of the use of donor material worldwide, with attention to intended parents, donors and donor-conceived children.
At present there are no consequences for new or ongoing treatments with donor sperm.
